Overall there are about 40 dams in the Tennessee River. 20 of these dams were built soley and owned by the TVA. Through the course of time other dams were purchased by the Tennessee Valley Authority. On top of all these they also opperate 15 other dams owned by The Aluminum Company of America.

The dams built along the main part of the river were largew and created series of lakes.
These dams were longer and not as tall. However the dams built on the branches of the river were made much taller. The tallest dam owned by the TVA is the Fontana Dam which standes at 480 feet high. The largest overall dam is the Kentucky Dam which is 1 1/2 miles long and 206 feet tall.

Electricity
2/3 of the power harnessed by the TVA is from steam plants and the rest is hydroelectric. The plan was to make as much power as possibel and sell it mat the lowest rates possible. The Tennessee Valley Authority sells power to 156 retail power distributors and 56 to industrial and government.
